Palliative care is often mistakenly viewed as end-of-life care, when it is actually meant to support patients and families throughout the treatment for serious diseases.  Current estimates suggest that approximately 75% of people approaching the end of life may benefit from palliative care.  In addition, the growing number of older people and increasing prevalence of chronic illness mean even more people will benefit.  Palliative care matters, and despite well-documented facts, it is still underdeveloped and underfunded globally.  Therefore, opportunities to develop palliative care programs abound because most people who need it are living longer and benefiting from disease treatment.

The healthcare and insurance communities are listening, as shown by the increased number of programs that are homebased, community-based, and in hospitals.  This session will focus on basic market assessment, development, and implementation of a palliative care program and will provide tools to focus your efforts.
